The Dead Souls’ Path

A long time ago an old man in our village told this story. He said that it had happened to him.
When he was young, he rode out to graze his horses at night.  Then he fell asleep on a little path. When he began to doze, someone pulled his homespun overcoat from his head to his neck. He didn’t worry about it, pulled his overcoat up again, and kept on dozing. As soon as he fell asleep, somebody pulled that overcoat away from his head again. He rose and looked around, but there was no one to be seen. At first he thought that an acquaintance might be trying to scare him. He covered his head again and be-gan to snooze. No sooner had he fallen asleep than somebody pulled at his overcoat with such force, that it flew a couple of meters away from him. He cursed and got up, took his overcoat, and found another place to sleep. When he fell asleep, he dreamt that a voice said, "Man! Don’ t go to sleep on a path that everyone travels on! That means that ghosts walk there by night. A living person shouldn’t lie down there."
