2. Star Names in the Dictionaries
In the third edition of K.Sirvydas dictionary (1642) we can find the following star
names:
Venus
'Star of dawn'.
Žvayzde vakarine - Hesperus 'evening
star'.
Ursa Major
- Grižułas - Arctos, Ursa maior
'Manege'.
Pleiades
- Sietinas
- Pleiades, Vergiliae ' Sieve'.
A number of the star names is found in the German-Lithuanian and
Lithuanian -German dictionaries of the 18th and 19th centuries, published in Lithuania
Minor (Mažoji Lietuva). They include:
Venus
- Aušrinė
or Aušrinė žvaigždė, Aušros žvaigždė ' Star of dawn'.
Vakarinė or Vakarinė žvaigždė, Vakarų žvaigždė 'evening star'.
Žvėrinė '[star] of beast'.
Ursa Major
- Gryžulio Rats; Gryzdo Rat(a)s; Grįžo ratas, Grįžulio ratas
'circle of Grizhulas'
or Gryzdas, Grįžulas, Gręzu; Grįžulys 'Manege(?)'.
Pleiades
'sieve' or Dangaus sėtas 'heavenly
sieve' or Setynas, Setinys 'lustre'.
Orion
'haymaker'.
Petro ramtis 'Peter's stick'.
Hoedi or Capella and Hoedi
(Hoedi - 3 stars asterizm in Auriga (Vežėjas) constellation)
ploughman and
oxen.
Capella
Nešėja valgio, Walgio nešėja 'food - bearer'.
Cassiopeia
- Jukštandis
or Jostandis; Juksztande '?'.
Via lactea
'way of Birds' or Paukščių takas 'path of birds'
In Lithuanian dictionaries in the East Prussia apart from the Venus
we also find some other old names of the planets:
Mars - Žvėrinė mažoji '[star] of beast Minor'.
Saturn - Žvėrinė didėji '[star] of beast Major'.
Planetes (common name of planet) - Žvaigždė bėgūnė 'Star - Runner'.
Kometes - Žvaigždė su uodega 'The Star with tail' or
Uodeguota 'Tailed'.
D.Poška in his work "O starożytnych obrządkach religijnych
poganskich w xięstwach Litewskim I żmuydzkim" (1823) includes the following star names:'Manege(?)'.
Pleiades - Žwaizdziusytas 'Sieve
of Stars'.
Sirius - Szunis zwayzdie 'Dog's
star'.
Castor i Polux - Lelum and Polelum or Dvynaitiai
'Twin'.
