A PIPE
Gudo dūda

It is a dance, though the first part of it reminds more of a game. The dance is danced in couples. The music consists of two parts (second part is the melody of the first part, repeated twice faster), each having 16 bars. The musicians created a song according to the dance.

The sequence of the dance

The I element is made by the dancers in a couple standing in front of each other. Slow tempo of the music helps the dancers to sing clearly pronouncing the syllables.

1. Winding a thread into a ball

(16 bars)

1 bar:

“Gudo duda”

In the height of a bossom the dancers make a ball from the thread” (the elbows are a little bit protruded, and the fists are made), widing the thread in the direction opposite to oneself. They sing slowly and wind quickly and merrily.

2 bar:

“timpt - timpt”

The dancers push their elbows to the sides twice energetically, as if “stretching the thread”.

  3 - 4 bar:

“Gudo duda timpt - timpt”

The movements of the 1-2 bar are repeated, but now the “thread” is wound towards oneself.

  5 bar:

“Gudo duda…”

Once again “the thread is wound” in the direction opposite to oneself.

  6 bar:

“timp-timpt-timpt”

In the height of the bossom the dancers beat the right fist on the left fist every quaver, as if hammering a nail (from the top towards the bottom).

  7 bar

“Gudo duda…”

The ball is wound in the direction of oneself.

8 bar

“…timp-timpt-timpt”

The movements of 6 bar are repeated (but they beat from the top with the left fist).

9 - 16 bar

Again the movements of 1-8 bar are repeated.

2. Waltz - polka

(16 bars)

1-16 bar

The melody of the first half of the music is repeated, but in polka rhythm. Having finished “winding a ball”, the dancers join hands like for a waltz and dance waltz polka all 16 bars merrily.
